Trenton's Choice

Updated: Feb 10, 2020

Hey everyone I promised I would share patterns I have done. This is not really a pattern it is more of a recipe of sorts. It is on my Ravelry account. I made it for my son, he wanted a slouchy hat. This hat is reversible, and is basically 2 hats in one.

It uses the provisional cast on. If your not familiar with it there is a link in the pattern for it. It will allow you to make a reversible hat.

It is up to you how long you make the hat. I made my son's 9" and he is able to wear it slouchy as in the pattern or he can turn the bottom up for a beanie/tuque.

I hope you enjoy the pattern and are able to make many hats with it. This pattern would be great to do a stranded hat on one side and make it solid on the other side. It is an alternative to double knit hats. The designs are endless with this pattern. Let your imagination run and create a great hat for yourself or a friend.

Trenton's Choice

A fun hat design by: Donna

This hat came by way of inspiration. I saw a picture on Pinterest but the link was long dead. The pattern unavailable. I spent quite a bit of time searching but could not find a pattern – not even Google had the answer!

I started brainstorming and even asked my friend, Drezna, what she thought. From there, this pattern was born. It is called Trenton’s Choice because it is his decision on how to wear the hat.

This is the basic hat structure. If you are like me, you can see a thousand different variations popping into your head. I am going to write the basics of how to create this hat. You can fill in with whatever your heart and needles desire!

I used a worsted weight yarn and made this 9” so my son, Trenton, could have a slouchy hat. You could do this hat to 9” and use the extra bits to turn the bottom up or leave it slouchy. It is super warm since it is a double hat. If you want, knit for 7” before decreasing and have a tight fitting hat with no ability to turn up the bottom of it – but still have a nice, warm double hat for the winter.

Glossary:

CO: Cast on

K: knit K2tog: knit two together

DPN's: double point needles

Yarn: You can use any yarn that you would like. If you already know how a certain yarn behaves, you can cast on the number of stitches you feel appropriate, what needles to use and go from there. I used Caron Simply Soft, worsted weight yarn. For a truly reversible hat, you will need two colors – one color inside and one color outside. I used black and Royal Blue.

Needles: US size 8 (5 mm) 16" circular needles and a set of 5 DPN’s size 8 OR size 8 circular. Just move your work to the longer cable when ready to start the decreases with magic loop.

Set Up: Using the provisional cast on, cast on 80 + 1 stitch for the jog less join.

Provisional cast on video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKErReecbqk A couple tips I would like to give you for this. You really want to use a different colored yarn for your provisional cast on. At the end of your provisional cast on, chain about 10 extra stitches but do not tie them off.

Drezna's Den: A great (closed) Facebook page that has some good videos. Drezna shows how to perform the provisional cast on and how to use the provisional cast on later. If you stumble or need help, it’s a great group to ask questions. If I or Drezna don’t know the answer, we look it up and learn it to help out!

Pattern: Knit the hat in stockinette stitch until it measures 9" for the slouchy look and to be able to turn it up on the bottom if you like. This is the part that you can get creative and explore different color or stitch options. Enjoy yourself for 9”!! (7” for a snug hat with no fold up bottom edge)

Decrease: Change to DPN’s or magic loop as needed:

Row 1: *K8, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round

Row 2 and all even rows knit the round

Row 3: *K7, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round

Row 5: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round

Row 7: *k5, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round

Row 9: *k4, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round

Row 11: *k3, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round

Row 13: *k2, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round

Row 15: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round

Row 17: k2tog around Cut your yarn, thread on a darning needle and pull through remaining stitches. Weave in your end.

Part 2, the second hat: To make the second part of the hat. This is where you will use the provisional cast on. Start by pulling your chain stitches out slowly and carefully, putting the live stitches from the hat onto your needle as you come to them. When finished picking up all 80 stitches, start knitting with your second color. Repeat the instructions above for the “Pattern” including the “Decrease” section.

Side Note: After knitting a couple rounds, go ahead and weave in your loose ends. You will not be able to do this later. I also caution you, make sure your hat is right side out before closing off the point for this second half. Also, if you want, after threading the darning needle, use the left over yarn to pull both “tops” together to a point. This will help the hat not separate, binding them together. Congratulations! You have a double sided hat, double hat!

Stay warm! Feel free to share pictures of your finished hats. I love to see what creations y’all come up with! Donna
